247255This is a team-based exercise for engineering undergraduates to be performed during the first week of Part IA. By playing with Lego Mindstorms, students begin to appreciate the many challenges inherent in engineering system design, from gear backlash to structural rigidity and automatic control. Following a gentle introduction to the various Lego NXT components and the Matlab/Octave programming environment, teams go on to develop their own NXT systems as they see fit: the only requirement is that the system must demonstrate some aspect of engineering science. The exercise culminates in teams presenting their work to staff and students in small group sessions.
