NXT Firmware Version Overview

An inofficial guide to the various NXT firmware versions out there (all compatible to the original software by LEGO).
Official LEGO releases
All releases in this category are the "official LEGO Mindstorms NXT firmware"
Versions 1.0x - 1.05
- Came with NXT 1.0 toy set
- Came with NXT Education set
Version 1.26
- Comes with NXT-G 2.0 Education Software 2.0
- NXT 2.0 Generation Firmware
- Huge performance improvement (roughly factor 2?) compared to 1.0x
- Floating point support
- Datalogging features
- Occasional freezes with certain NXC programs
- Bugs with light sensor calibration
- No support for NXT 2.0 Color sensor
Version 1.28
- Comes with NXT 2.0 Toy set
- Comes with NXT-G 2.0 software
- Fixes some bugs from 1.26
- Support for the NXT 2.0 Color sensor
Version 1.29
- Based on 1.28
- Apparently some minor bugfixes (sensor calibration?)
- Currently available from http://mindstorms.lego.com/en-us/support/files/Driver.aspx#Firmware
Version 1.31
- No changelog available
- Probably suited for the Education edition
- Might support new "renewable energy functions" (e.g. power meter)
- Might be based on 1.26

Releases by J. Hansen, "enhanced Firmware"
These versions usually come with BricxCC (see http://bricxcc.sourceforge.net/ ). They fix bugs from the original firmware and introduce more features for NXC and NBC programs, however there is a small performance penalty compared to LEGO original versions (roughly about 5 to 10% slower). They usually don't compare sound files such as the menu-click.
Versions 1.06, 1.07, 1.08 (?)
- Based on / compatible to 1.04 / 1.05 official
- No floating point support, NXT 1.0 generation
Versions 1.27 to 1.29
- NXT 2.0 generation
- Based on 1.26 and/or 1.28
- Floating point, NXT 2.0 color sensor
